MEDIA RELEASE, APR. 12, 2025
We acknowledge the death of Pope Francis and extend our condolences to those who mourn him. As the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis held a position of immense spiritual and institutional authority. His passing marks the end of a papacy during which the global crisis of clergy sexual abuse remained a defining and unresolved legacy of the Church.
For survivors of abuse, and for communities around the world that continue to grapple with the devastating impact of institutional betrayal, this moment invites reflection, but also renewed commitment. While Pope Francis took some steps toward addressing abuse within the Church, for many, those steps fell short—lacking transparency, accountability, and the centering of survivor voices that justice demands.
We recognize the deep harm caused by decades of cover-up and silence, and we call on the leadership of the Catholic Church to see this moment not as an end, but as an opportunity to act with honesty, humility, and moral courage. True reconciliation is only possible when truth is fully acknowledged and responsibility is accepted.
In honour of those who have suffered, and in the hope of building safer, more accountable institutions, we will continue to advocate for the voices of survivors to be heard—and for meaningful change that is long overdue.
