Roman Catholic Church settles with John Doe on day 7 of a 19-day trial. Following six-and-a-half days of trial before Justice Catherine Murray in New Westminster, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vancouver settled with the plaintiff, who remains anonymized as John Doe. John Doe was targeted by both Kilty and Clavin when he was just six years old as a grade one student at Holy Trinity Elementary School in North Vancouver, in 1974-1975. Both men sexually violated the young boy in various and severe ways, including penetrative rape. The Vancouver Archdiocese admitted the fact of the abuse and its vicarious (strict) liability before trial, but it maintained a denial of any direct fault.

Bishop Accountability - May 30, 2025 Winnipeg, MB - In May 2025, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation published a list of over 100 Oblate priests and brothers who worked in Canadian residential schools. The list aims to support transparency, accountability, and healing for Indigenous communities. These schools, many run by the Oblates, were part of a system that forcibly assimilated Indigenous children and led to widespread abuse. The release helps centralize scattered records and acknowledges the Church’s role in this dark chapter of Canadian history.
